Most mid-scale and chain hotels worldwide use microfiber (down alternative) pillows because they are hypoallergenic, machine-washable, and cost-effective, with a consistent feel that guests can rely on. Luxury and 5-star hotels typically offer both a soft down/feather blend pillow and a firmer microfiber option per bed, so guests can choose what works for their sleep position. Budget properties often use hollow-fiber polyester pillows for the lowest cost point. The two-pillow-per-bed approach (one soft, one firm) is increasingly standard in 4–5 star hotels worldwide.

Standard pillow size is 48×73 cm (flanged 50×75 cm). King size pillows measure 51×91 cm (flanged 53×95 cm). European (square) pillows at 65×65 cm are used decoratively, typically in pairs propped against the headboard in luxury hotel presentations. Most standard hotel rooms use two standard pillows per bed; King and Super King beds use two king-size pillows or four standard pillows for a fuller, more dressed look.

Microfiber pillows typically last 12–18 months under commercial laundering conditions before they lose loft and supportive structure. Down and feather pillows last longer — 2–3 years with proper care and regular fluffing — because natural fibers hold their loft better over time. Hollow fiber pillows generally need replacement every 9–12 months. Hotels replace pillows when they no longer spring back, develop lumps, show permanent staining, or fail the “fold test” (fold the pillow in half — it should spring back; if it stays folded, it is time to replace).

Absolutely. Many hotels offer a “pillow menu” with multiple firmness options available from housekeeping. At minimum, we recommend offering at least two types per bed: one soft-to-medium and one medium-to-firm, so guests can choose based on their sleep position (stomach and back sleepers often prefer softer pillows; side sleepers need firmer support). We can produce different firmness levels with clear labelling so your housekeeping team can easily sort and distribute them.

Pure down pillows can trigger allergies in sensitive individuals because of microscopic dust mite and dander particles that accumulate in the fill. However, a high-quality down-proof shell (233 TC or higher, tight weave) significantly reduces allergen escape, and regular washing at 60°C+ kills dust mites. For properties where allergies are a concern, we recommend microfiber down-alternative pillows — they feel similar to down but are naturally hypoallergenic and can be fully laundered more frequently without degradation. Many hotels use a dual-pillow approach: one down/feather for luxury feel, one microfiber for guests with sensitivities.

The formula depends on your pillow-per-bed configuration. For 2 pillows per bed at Par 2 (one set in use, one in laundry / reserve): Total = rooms × 2 × 2. For a 50-room hotel with 2 pillows per room at Par 2 = 200 pillows total. For luxury properties with 4 pillows per bed (2 standard + 2 decorative) and higher par: Total = rooms × pillows per bed × par level. Pillow protectors should be 1:1 with pillow count to extend pillow life. Pillow replacement is typically 10–20% annually, depending on quality and usage.

For down and feather pillows, look for EN12934 (European down and feather standard) which sets rules for fill composition, cleaning, and labeling.
