Down and feather duvets require more careful laundering — they should be washed in large-capacity front loaders on gentle cycle with mild detergent, and dried completely on low heat with dryer balls to prevent clumping. Down is the soft, fluffy undercoating of geese or ducks — it clusters in three-dimensional filaments that trap air and provide excellent warmth with minimal weight. In hotel duvets, the down-to-feather ratio determines both cost and feel: higher down content means lighter, fluffier, more expensive. 5-star hotels often use 70–90% down for the lightest, most luxurious feel.
